About the event

Following the success of the first two editions in 2019 and 2022, the Copernicus Relays of Luxembourg and Belgium (i.e. LIST, Skywin, ISSeP, Spacebel and VITO) organised the 3rd edition of the AI4Copernicus event, focussing this time on:

“Earth Observation & Artificial Intelligence solutions for climate change challenges”

which took place on 25 May 2023 in Mondorf-les-Bains, Luxembourg or online.

This new edition of the AI4Copernicus event  focused on climate change and its impact on energy, food and water security. To withstand current and future pressures on our natural resources, integrated and sustainable management practices are required to balance the needs of people, nature and the economy. The participants were invited to come and meet international experts specialising in the use of AI and EO technologies for tackling related societal challenges.

Our AI4Copernicus day offered the opportunity to:

  • Review the latest technological developments in the use of AI for Earth
    Observation.
  • Get a better idea of the challenges that society is facing in the field of
    climate change.
  • Witness some examples of existing technological implementations of AI and EO to address the issue of water, energy and food security.
  • Initiate new collaborations.

The conference was preceded by a 2-day summer school on 23 and 24 May 2023 with international lecturers providing an advanced training on latest AI-based technologies for processing multi source EO data, thereby enabling, for example, successful applications in precision agriculture and disaster management. Both PhD students and postdoctoral researchers were invited to apply for the training which took place in the premises of the
Luxembourg Institute of Science and Technology in Esch-sur-Alzette, Luxembourg.
